Census method for estimating the population size of the endemic and threatened land snail

چکیده
Census method for estimating the population size of the endemic and threatened land snail Iberus gualtieranus gualtieranus.— Iberus gualtieranus gualtieranus is an endemic and threatened land snail inhabiting south–eastern Spain. Because it seeks shelter in karstic fissures when inactive, detection is difficult, and censuses may be biased. In this study, a methodology is developed to take an adequate census of this subspecies. The census was performed in the population of Sierra Elvira when the probability of detection was the highest, minimizing the bias. The results show that this population is patchy and has about 500,000 specimens. However, this subspecies is probably vulnerable to extinction as only three isolated populations are known and it is threatened by several factors. The census method in this study may be useful to conserve this endemic species.

Conservation Status of a Recently Described Endemic Land Snail, Candidula coudensis, from the Iberian Peninsula
We assessed the distribution, population size and conservation status of Candidula coudensis, a recently described endemic land snail from Portugal. From March 2013 to April 2014, surveys were carried out in the region where the species was described. We found an extent of occurrence larger than originally described, but still quite small (13.5 km2). The species was found mainly in olive groves...
متن کاملA Recommendation for Net Undercount Estimation in Iran Population and Dwelling Censuses
Census counts are subject to different types of nonsampling errors. One of these main errors is coverage error. Undercount and overcount are two types of coverage error. Undercount usually occurs more than the other, thus net undercount estimation is important. There are various methods for estimating the coverage error in censuses. One of these methods is dual system (DS) that usually uses dat...
متن کاملBiodiversity Conservation of Reptiles and Mammals in the Khorasan Provinces, Northeast of Iran
The reptile and mammals fauna of North-East of Iran were investigated and the contraction and fragmentation of some species due to climatic changes and human activities were analyzed. The sampling was carried out in selected stations throughout the Great Khorsan. The results showed that there are approximately 71 reptiles (including 39 species of lizards, 32 snakes and one turtle) and 83 specie...
متن کاملComparison of Small Area Estimation Methods for Estimating Unemployment Rate
Extended Abstract. In recent years, needs for small area estimations have been greatly increased for large surveys particularly household surveys in Sta tistical Centre of Iran (SCI), because of the costs and respondent burden. The lack of suitable auxiliary variables between two decennial housing and popula tion census is a challenge for SCI in using these methods. In general, the...
متن کاملOn Estimating a De Facto Population and Its Components
Abstract. This paper deals with estimating a population that is largely defined by the fact that its size, composition, and distribution are not readily accessible from census data in the U.S. and the other countries that use the De Jure concept of population. The population in question is based on the De Facto concept, which involves the estimation of people where they are found rather than wh...
